Salt n Pepa and Heavy D up in the limousine

Ok I'm not posting about Notorious BIG, or Salt n Pepa, or Heavy D, or limousines .... I'm just posting about salt.  I caught your attention though didn't I!? (or maybe you're not quite into 90's rap and you have no idea what I'm talking about right now...)  Anyway...... SALT!

Most of us are using TABLE SALT on our food and in our baking.  Well, its pretty crappy stuff.  HIMILAYAN SALT, CELTIC SALT, and SEA SALT are great salts.  They are more expensive... of course... but let me tell you why its worth it.

Whats the deal with Table Salt?

Table salt is normally rock or ocean salt that is mined, heat blasted, chemically treated, bleached, and then anti-caking agents and iodine are added to it. Natural, untreated Salt (ya know, how god made it) is packed full of trace minerals that are essential for our body.  84 minerals to be exact.  After table salt has gone through processing, 82 of the 84 minerals have been destroyed!  You are left with Sodium......aaaaand Chloride.  Oh yea, and added potassium iodide (a source of iodine), and a chemical stabilizer for the potassium iodide, and another chemical so the salt doesn't clump.  Yummy.

some results of high intake of processed salt:
-rapid rise of blood pressure while the heart attempts to move the toxins in the salt away from the heart.
-retention of water and other fluids
-contributes to chronic imbalances like diabetes, gout, and obesity
-swelling
-kidney, liver, and thyroid problems
-asedema
-hypertension
-heart disease
-strained elimination systems
-muscle cramps
-edema
-stroke
-heart failure
-PMS
-anxiety and depression

A few problems with most of our current situations:
The American Heart Association recommends that we have 1500 mg of sodium a day... and most of us are consuming upwards of 3500 mg a day.  Yikes!  Even if you are not intentionally adding salt to your food... there is loads of sodium in almost all processed "food."
>  So not only are we eating WAY TOO MUCH sodium.... we are eating sodium that is void of all its natural nutrition and chemically treated.

Why are other natural salts so great?

Every cell in our bodies needs salt.  The recommended daily sodium intake is 1500 mg... which is about a teaspoon and a half - ish.  Consuming way over this recommendation is still detrimental, even when you are consuming good salts.  So MODERATION!

some results of switching from table salt to good salts:
-alkaline minerals keep us hydrated
-sodium-potassium ratios are balanced
-fills the body with powerful electrolytes
-trace minerals fuel our immune systems, thyroid, and adrenal functions
-boost the creation of digestive enzymes, starting right away in the mouth
-these enzymes aid in the absorption of other vitamins and nutrients into our body

-and they taste better!

So what should you do?

-cut out the processed salts from your diet by switching your table salt to natural salt, and also cutting out processed foods which are inevitable packed with processed salt.

-READ LABELS!  There are some Sea Salts that are actually partially processed and not worth your money.  Salts that are untreated are usually a grayish, pinkish, or brownish color resulting from all the minerals within them.

-Try a few different kinds of salts... because they will vary in taste depending on where they come from.
Here is a short list of salts you could look for:
-Celtic Salt
-Himalayan Salt
-Sea Salt
-Real Salt (this is from a salt deposit in Redmond Utah... just fyi to my fellow utahans :-)
